Listening To: J. Cole

It's surprising it's taken me this long to come up with a reason to blog about J. Cole. If you saw Jay-Z's show in MI you saw Cole as well. He's the first signee to Jay-Z's new label, Roc Nation. He's a producer/rapper like Kanye and his tapes are at a College Dropout level of changethegameability. Easily the best newcomer. If I had to bet on him or Drake to matter more in 5, 10, 15, 20 years... it's J. Cole every time.

Here's his very new verse over Common's "Go!", kinda destroyed the track:

Opposite of Adults

So quite a while back Chiddy Bang released a solid mixtape effort (their freshman tape as far as I know) called the Swelly Express. They did their thing mixing a lot of poppy choruses with simple lyrics and re-doing a host of outside the box alt rock and pop songs. Included on the tape was a track called "KIDS (Opposite of Adults)" that bit it's beat from a remix of "Kids" by MGMT off of Oracular Spectacular. Easily one of the better songs on the tape; I'm happy to see it got treated to some ridiculous visuals. Pretty perfect for what's going on here and eerily similar to the early screenshots for the reincarnation of NBA Jam (for Wii only, kill yourselves EA Sports):

The game is sure to be great. Anyways, here's the video:

MSU's Very Own

So, I heard awhile back of this freshman here at State who was up on the whole rap game thing. Obviously, and reasonably, I was pretty skeptical. Freshman? Rap? My first thought is that dude's production would be on par with the sound quality of a wiretapped cell phone conversation. Not the case. Also a surprise is that not only is his production on point, so are his lyrics. He's obviously got a ways to go but since I heard of him a few months ago his resume has grown to include performances with Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa. Not too shabby, my freshman year I rarely woke up before the Brody Caf started serving dinner and dude is on stage with the Wizzle himself. If there's a more impressive freshman not named Nix or Sherman, point 'em out. He goes by Treezen, and you'll definitely be hearing that name around campus in the future.

Cudderisback (Freestyle)

This CuDi freestyle over an unreleased Vampire Weekend song came out a while back, but the video for it just came out a couple days ago; if you can really call it a music video. It's pretty funny nonetheless:

My New Shit

Alright, we're back. We've been lazy and yadda yadda but this time I'm (pretty) serious; and I'm gonna blog at least sporadically from now on. Pretty much half the blog so far has been music so I'll stick to that theme and drop you this new(?) and unreleased(?) Drake song, called "My New Shit". Not bad, good to see he's getting away from the "Best I've Ever Had" type music again.

And sticking with the new shit theme, here's the preview of our newest design...

We should have a pre-order going either tonight or tomorrow, and details on that are to follow. The goal is to have these IN YOUR HANDS for the Purdue game, so stay tuned.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

As you may know, it's nearly that time again. Which means, first and foremost... presents. Then family. Then Spartan Basketball and a Spartan Football Bowl Game. Nothing could be better than combining all three for a little less change than usual. To make it easier to shop for the Spartan fans on your lists (and easier on your wallets) we'll have a coupon code going on until 2010. Use the code "GRINCH" for 10% at any time.

And then kick back in your fresh gear and take in the Holidays.

Good luck on finals, study hard.

Nothing On You and Enemy of the State

All I've got for this post is a Thanksgiving Day worthy helping of new music. Check out this new track released by B.o.B "Nothing on You" if you haven't heard of him; he's definitely worth checking out. This is a super mainstream song for him but you can tell the dude is doing the right things.

Next, the new mixtape from Lupe Fiaso- released as a single mp3. That crazy Lupe, what will he think of next?

Travis Barker Remixes

So when we got back home last night, this new Travis Barker remix (of Drake's Forever) popped up; now we might not have been in the clearest of mindstates, but this impressed the hell out of us. He's just too good, too raw, too real. You get the impression that all of these are after only a few minutes of tinkering around with the song. Anyways, check out the new one (Drake's Forever) and two others he rips the hell out of (3AM and The One).

Shannon Brown

Needs to be included in the 2010 Slam Dunk Contest. Too dirty. Just check out these 3 dunks from games so far THIS SEASON. The team's only played 8 total, and Shannon only comes in late to put on a 4th quarter show for the Staples Center crowds... but they are getting their money's worth:

And a classic from last years Western Conference Finals:

Let's just pray we'll have a jumper like that in Durrell this season.

Without Bias

If you didn't already know, ESPN is in the midst of their 30th year on air. To celebrate, they're running a series of 30 hour-long documentaries called "30 for 30". They focus on lesser known stories in sports... stories of character, hope, betrayal, people, failure, and the greater sports mysteries of the last 30 years.

The next entry (which premiers tomorrow, November 3rd) is called Without Bias, and tells the story of former NBA first round draft pick; Len Bias. Bias died of a cocaine overdose before ever appearing in a Celtics jersey, but was widely considered one of (if not the) best collegiate players in an era that included Michael Jordan.

View the trailer here. Should be worth the watch.
